Choosing the right photographer for your Boudoir session.
Let’s start out by stating the obvious- yes I am a male boudoir photographer in a very heavily female-dominated space. For some clients, its important they are with another female, and that’s more than understandable… However, for the rest of those on the fence, I believe there are some other key components and questions you might want to ask your potential boudoir photographer (in the hopes that you might even choose me!)
Importance of a consult…
First off- you always want to have a consult with your potential tog. Take time to get to not only know their personality but also give them the ability to show you their work. Having comfort and peace of mind not only the photographer as a person, but also having confidence in their work will help calm the nerves going into your shoot knowing your investment is protected with a trusted professional. Considering the nature of boudoir- intimate posing, outfits, skin, etc- feeling the freedom you desire to obtain during the shoot is difficult to do when you do not feel comfortable with your choice of photographer.
Elephant in the room…. PRICING
Second- and I can’t stress this enough - choosing the photographer SHOULD NOT be a decision made solely on price point. Of course, everyone has a budget- however in many cases if it sounds too good to be true it often is. Professional photographers have invested years in their craft as well as tens of thousands on photo gear and equipment to be able to do what we love for a living. You want to leave your session with your products knowing that the photographer captured you as your true self, and trusting it to chance with a cheap photographer is not something I personally recommend for an intimate/empowering session such as boudoir.
Reviews and word of mouth…
Almost %75 of my bookings come from referrals and word of mouth. I feel so honored that my clients love their work and experience enough to refer me to others seeking the same! However, another great thing to read is the reviews for each photographer you speak with! Make sure positive things are being said about both the photos AND the experience they provide… Remember- this is more than just another photo session.
Also- ask yourself questions after sessing their portfolio-
Do I like their edited style?
Were their printed pieces high quality?
Was their life in their work?? Or did it feel too “staged” and scripted?
Some other great questions you should ask during your consult: (some of these are answered in our FAQ’s Blogpost)
What kind of editing/retouching do you do to your work?
Why do you personally shoot boudoir?
How do you choose your Hair and Makeup artist?
What’s your turnaround time?
Why do people choose you over other photographers?
